» NAME: James "Jim" Holden
» CANON: The Expanse
» CANON POINT: end of season 2
» AGE: 30
» SETTING: wiki
» SHORT DESCRIPTION: honorable, moral, dutiful, compassionate, humble, hot-tempered
» INFLUENTIAL EVENTS:
Leaving Earth & the Navy: Holden is the son of 8 biological parents. His parents expected him to fight for Montana as it was one of the last wildernesses still on Earth. When he turns 18, the parent he was closest to told him that he should leave. They'd expected too much out of their son, a purpose that was too much for any one person to have to shoulder. This is the decision that led Holden to joining the Navy so that he could leave Earth. While this did provide him with a way out of his original destiny, the Navy was not a good fit. He had ideological differences and the altercation became physical and led to Holden being removed. While this is in some ways a disgrace it is also a pivotal moment for Holden finding the freedom to choose what he does and who he is going to become.
Cantebury & Donnager: The crew of the Cantebury picks up on a distress call. There's an argument that they shouldn't call it in but Ade argues that they should. Ade was Holden's girlfriend at this time. The distress signal was called in and while everyone blames Ade, Holden is actually the one that called it in because he believed it was the right thing to do. After this, a small group departs to check out the seemingly abandoned Scopuli where the distress signal comes from. The signal had been planted. Before they can return to the Cantebury the ship is attacked and destroyed by a stealth ship. Holden assumes this ship was Martian and broadcasts to the public that the Cantebury was destroyed by Mars. He does this to protect himself and his crew from Mars, since they cannot kill them without making themselves look even more guilty for the Cantebury. The message is sent out and shortly after they encounter the Donnager.
Holden does receive a message from Ade that is cut off suddenly. She had something important to tell him and it seems implied that she could have been pregnant. Holden carries a lot of guilt for her death and the deaths of everyone on the Cantebury since he is the one that had called in that they had picked up a distress signal and that is what had led to the ship being destroyed.
After Holden and the rest of those on the shuttle were picked up by the Donnager, they're interrogated. The Martians try to create doubt in Holden's mind that Naomi is actually the one that was responsible for the Cantebury and not Mars. Holden is conflicted about this, having reason to doubt her loyalty but he doesn't change his statement.
As this is happening, the Donnager comes under attack in the same manner that the Cantebury had been attacked. Holden quickly realizes that this means that Martians are likely not to blame for the Cantebury. As Holden is escaping with a few of the Martians and experiencing heavy fire he insists that they go and get the rest of his people who were still being held. The Martian is extremely reluctant but Holden tells him that if it were him, that he'd go back for his men. They're able to rescue the others, though, one member had died before they were able to free them. Holden was willing to risk his own life to make sure he at least tried to save everyone. As they all make their way to the Tachi to make their escape many Martians are gunned down in order to protect them. This is a weight on Holden's conscience and pushes him to try and make sure that justice is served.
Eros: The events on Eros echo with Holden rather permanently coloring his decision making. Once on Eros, they begin to reluctantly work with Miller. It quickly becomes clear that some kind of bioweapon is being used on the people there. Holden starts to suspect this could lead to some answers about what happened on the Cantebury. Eros is on lockdown and Holden was barely able to avoid detection with Miller while the rest of the crew made their way back to the Roci. Holden and Miller walk into one of the containment rooms that people had been locked in, seeing they had been attacked with the same apparent bioweapon, they ended up getting dosed with a lethal amount of radiation.
Holden is able to act quickly to find medicine that would help with the symptoms so they could keep fighting and eventually escape to the Roci as well. They make it to the ship with hardly anytime to spare. The devastation and mass murder on Eros haunts Holden. Both he and Naomi believe that they should have been able to help more people. The horror that he saw on Eros makes him make emotional decisions that become increasingly violent. When Naomi pushes him about this he refuses to back down. He can't stop until he finishes the job. His actions start to become almost about revenge for a while and he often refers to what happened on Eros and can't seem to stand the fact that they were used as guinea pigs because others thought no one would care about what happened on Eros.
Marasmus: Holden works with Fred Johnson as they work out a plan to send a massive ship the Nauvoo into Eros to destroy it and hopefully contain the protomolecule and keep it from spreading. They encounter a ship, the Marasmus there. They are able to deduce that it has an expansive medbay but before their drone is able to gather enough information it's disabled. They were intending to board the ship when Doctor Mesplede, who is with a humanitarian group, connects to the Roci. He tells Holden that he thought they were a Martian ship and that's why he had disabled the drone and explains that they are there to attempt to help survivors on Eros and provide aid.
Mesplede withholds the fact that they had already gained access to Eros. Holden attempts to stop Mesplede with the threat of boarding the ship with his crew. Miller discovers that there was a breach by a member of the Marasmus crew. They realize that they had been deceived and immediately demand that the Marasmus return and let themselves be inspected for the protomolocule. Mesplede refuses and insists that the world needs to know this information. Holden has their ship jammed so that they cannot broadcast it yet. Holden reveals to Mesplede that they are not MCRN and that the protomolocule is not of Earth or Mars origin and to inform the world about it risks an outbreak of the contagion.
Holden begs Mesplede to stay silent about Eros but Mesplede continues to refuse and the Marasmus attempts to get out of range of the jamming. Holden reluctantly has to order a torpedo to take down the ship before it can get out of range and begin broadcasting. He'd exhausted every option before resorting to it, not wanting to have to kill innocent people but believing that this choice is the one that would protect the most people. Despite that this was his only option, Holden does feel guilty. He feels like he should be able to save everyone and is realizing that he can't.
» FIT: Holden is the captain of a gunship and is well-acquainted with life in space. As far as fitting in, he'll catch on quickly to the new environment since it is not all that different from his own. He was born on Earth but joined the Navy to be able to leave it and hasn't returned since. He has been space travelling for some time now.
